Beams with microvascular networks in the substrate and brittle coatings containing catalyst are loaded in four-point bending to induce cracking in the coating.  An acoustic emission sensor is used to detect the occurrence of cracking.  After a sufficient healing period, the coatings are reloaded to reopen cracks and repeat the healing process.
